THE GREAT BOOKS ACADEMY
ADULT SOCRATIC SEMINARS
Our Great Books Program for Adults is scheduled to have its first live-audio seminar online on Thursday, September 20, at 6:00-8:00 P.M. Pacific Time (7:00 P.M., Mountain time; 8:00 P.M. CDT;
9:00 P.M. EDT).
That is the only evening start-time that will accommodate all four continental U.S. time zones. After that initial meeting the seminars will take place on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month,
beginning in October. [Due to the responsibilities that most adults have -which high school and college students generally do not have - weekly seminars are a bit too difficult to schedule].
So the second seminar will be on Thursday, October 11 at 6:00 P.M., PT. They will continue until the end of May, 2002.
The readings are the same as are listed for our Freshman Great Books Program [readings]. More information may be found at greatbooksacademy.org online. The readings for the first seminar are Hesiod's Theogony and Aeschylus' Prometheus
Bound. After that, each participant is expected to read the next two weeks' readings prior to the next fortnightly seminar. So by the second seminar everyone will have recently read Homer's Illiad.
To participate in these Great Books seminars one needs to have a computer with a minimum processor speed of 120 MHz, a minimum 28k modem, a full duplex sound card, and a headset with microphone or
separate speakers and a microphone. Nearly all computers will meet these minimal requirements, excepting a headset.
To enroll in this adult program just fill out the enrollment form [enrollment] online or print it out and fax or mail
it in. You may pay with a credit card online, or over the phone at 1-800-521-4004, or you can mail in a check with your enrollment form. The program requires sufficient enrollments in advance to
commence, so please enroll at your earliest convenience. Should enrollment be insufficient, full refund checks will be mailed before the end of September, 2001.
If you have questions please send them to us at steve@lewiscounty.com. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss the great ideas of the geniuses of Western civilization, online, in the near future.
